Painting Pandora Kaaki in the studio

I have never worked out how one image manages both at the same time, and Pandora (Dreaming in Blue) is what happened when I tried to find out by painting it. I did not find out. It is still doing both, and now it is doing it at you instead of at me.

That is the most useful thing I can say about this canvas. It is not a puzzle with an answer at the bottom of it. The two readings sit in the same picture and neither one gives way, and a painting is one of the few objects patient enough to keep them both.

Days at a time across several weeks, then nothing, then more. There was no plan. It stopped when I was done with it.

Pandora Kaaki paintings: what exists

Oil on stretched canvas, 100 x 80 cm, signed, one of one, from Painted Idols. Painted from a photograph she published herself, and the painting credits it. A hand-signed print exists in a small edition that is never reprinted. The canvas was painted by hand from that photograph; what it became is the painter's doing, not hers.

What is still available, and at what price, is on the cards below.

“Something stops me. Then I have to deal with it.”

I wrote to Pandora Kaaki about this painting, as I do to every woman in the series. Not every message gets an answer. If you are Pandora Kaaki, or you made the photograph, and you would rather it were not shown here: write to the studio and it comes down. No explanation needed.
